Superior Transparent was proud to lead the design and supply of a 29,784 SF transparent noise barrier system across four bridge structures in Hampton, Virginia. This project showcased our Modified Gen 3 Ready-Fit Frame, custom-engineered to meet highly demanding site conditions while delivering an aesthetically pleasing and community-conscious solution.

Engineering Complexity & Collaboration

The project presented several unique technical challenges from the outset. One of the most significant was the extreme wind load requirement of 57 psf, approximately 60% higher than typical structure-mounted applications. This necessitated a custom structural approach to ensure long-term performance and safety.

Anchorage design proved equally demanding.Unlike most DOTs, VDOT requires positive connection to both the bridge deck and the concrete traffic barrier, resulting in a total of 8 anchors per post. This was not only a complex design task, but also a logistical challenge during installation. Superior worked closely with design architects; JMT and engineers; STV to translate conceptual contract drawings into a fully coordinated system, navigating a host of structural variables including horizontal and vertical curves, super elevation, expansion joints, variable offsets, light poles, and cross slopes.

Given the complexity of the bridge geometry and installation environment, Superior’s involvement didn’t stop at design. The installation, executed by Mclean’s Contracting, was sequenced into two phases, with the first phase revealing several challenges due to field conditions that required quick thinking and close collaboration between engineers, project managers, and on-site personnel. Superior’s team provided hands-on technical support to trouble shoot these obstacles in realtime, ensuring the system was installed efficiently and accurately despite the evolving conditions.

“Superiorhas been a dependable partner on the I-64 HREL Segment 4 project, working withus from design through installation. Their responsive, collaborative approach played a key role in delivering a high-quality result for VDOT and the Hampton community.”

Product Details & Community Impact

The system featured powder-coated gray aluminum frames fitted with clear acrylic panels and black fragment retention filaments, balancing safety, durability, and visual appeal. At over 30 feet high, the bridges could have created deep shadows to the landscape below, butSuperior’s transparent system solved for this, letting natural light to shine through and preserving views of Hampton’s waterways and skyline.

Superior’s role extended far beyond product supply. Our team played a vital part in the system’s development, from conceptual coordination to real-time problem-solving during installation. The result is a clean, modern, and resilient noise barrier system that enhances safety, protects community aesthetics, and reflects the collaborative spirit of infrastructure innovation.
